300 baud
The official IRC channel of the IDL

Welcome to the 300baud/IRC briefing page.

#300baud is located on the EFnet group of IRC (internet relay chat) servers. For a listing of servers go here.

In order to join in on the fun in #300baud you need an IRC client. We suggest that you use mIRC if you are in Windows, or BitchX if you are in Linux or would like to try out the Windows version of BitchX.

Once logged on to IRC type /join #300baud and you should enter the channel.

History
of #300baud (in the beginning)

There is a story behind the creation of #300baud and why it's called that instead of #IDL

When Kali was new and the registration numbers didn't extend much past 3000, there was a chat channel on Kali Central called #300baud. This channel was set up by people with fast connections (usually college students with ethernet connections in the dorms) to poke fun at everyone using modems.

When the idea of the IDL came around, Karash decided we should have a place to talk about IDL issues and Descent in general away from the chaos in Kali chat. Thus #300baud was born on EFnet.

The Bots
(What the hell is a bot?)

Bots are our electronic friends that help us keep the channel open at all times. That is their main purpose. The other purpose is to help us keep control of the channel and various information about the regular visitors of the channel.

PyroPimp - The original bot of the channel. The name was thought up late at night when we needed to come up with a name for our channel controller. And on a side note this is where Kiln and Hal9000 got the name for their Real Audio show, PyroPimps.

PyroGX - Usually the main bot of the channel. It is on a more stable shell than PyroPimp, and is run by Jaeger over at Morpheus.Net.

Bot Commands
(How do I get the bot to say stuff?)

The number one question asked in the channel is "How do I get the bot to say things when I enter the channel?" Ladder staff and channel regulars are instantly identified by the bots when they enter the channel, and you can be, too. I'm going to tell you just how to arrange it.

Upon joining #300baud the first thing that you should do is type:
/msg pyropimp idl
This will make the bot recognize you at your current hostmask and the bot will know you from now on as long as you are logging on to IRC from the same ISP.

Next you'll need to set a password. Type this:
/msg pyropimp pass [password]
Where it says [password] you will need to enter a password that you won't forget. We can reset it to something else, but it's a bit of a hassle. Also don't include the [ or ] when you enter the password.

Finally, to get the bot to say stuff you need to type this:
/msg pyropimp info [password] [info]
The bot will need your password to confirm who you are before setting an info line. The info line does have a max character limit, but there is enough to put in pretty much whatever you want.

Channel Conduct
(Keep it clean!)

Generally we don't have much of a problem in #300baud. Everyone knows that this isn't Kchat and things are carried out in a bit of a different manner here. One of the major reasons we are on IRC is that it is more controlled than Kchat, so when a problem does come about with someone in the channel, it can be taken care of swiftly.

The main thing that we ask is that you keep your conversations clean. There are some young people on #300baud and we would like to keep the content clean for their sake (We have our reasons).

Also, we do have a few members from Outrage Entertainment that stop by every once in a while to chat about whatever (and yes we talk about Descent with them). Please do not badger them with questions about their job or any game that they might be currently working on. Be kind, we like having these guys around.

Mainly what we are asking here is to use some Tact. This way everyone will enjoy their time spent on #300baud.
