1.0. General FAQ

1.1. This Ladder rocks! Why don't you have sponsors and ads?

Although we admit that putting a lot of time and effort into a project worthy of sponsors is nice, we at the IDL do this for the simple love of the game and the great people who play it. The IDL will always continue as non-profit. The staff of the IDL will never profit from our membership base. We are open to any give-aways for tourneys and the like...as long as there are no publicity requirements from us.

1.2. Why isn't there a separate ladder for D1, D2, and D3?

Well, first of all, it is generally agreed that D1, D2 and D3 are very different games (D3 moreso than the others). However, we (the IDL and its members) think that to be considered a "good" or "great" player you must master all three styles of play. This means D1, D2, and D3. Members are usually expected to be flexible in their game selection, and try to play a mix of all three games when possible.

NOTE: D3 is not required until the full game is released, but you may still play matches in D3demo.

1.3. I don't understand the Tier system...why is the ladder separated into two groups?
The first reason is to set up a purely nominational system. The second tier you apply to, but to reach the first tier you must be invited by the players already there. Also, there were calls for a type of controlling membership that had certain powers over and responsibility for the rest of the ladder. The First Tier is designed to be the cream of the crop. The best. Members who have proven themselves time and time again. The second tier is for those still refining their skills, and for up and coming players. Being on the Second Tier does not mean you suck. You obviously have skill or you would not have been accepted onto the ladder in the first place. Just think of yourself as being in the "pack", the hunt for #1. Play hard, be polite, relax, and good things will go your way.
      See also: 3.0, 4.0.

1.3.1. What is LT and UT?
LT and UT are acronyms for Upper Tier (or Top Tier, First Tier) and Lower Tier (or Bottom Tier, Second Tier), respectively. They refer to both the tiers and the players in them.
      See also: 3.0, 4.0, 5.3.

1.3.2. What does the Lower Tier do for the ladder?

The Lower Tier members play matches with other Lower Tier players, exhibition matches (which do not affect stats) with Upper Tier players, and vote for applicants to be added to the IDL.

      See also: 3.0, 5.3

1.3.3. What does the Upper Tier do for the ladder?

The Upper Tier members play matches with other Upper Tier players, exhibition matches (which do not affect stats) with Lower Tier players, exercise judiciary power over the membership via the Regulate page, and contribute to IDL policy-making from time to time. The First Tier is the best of the best, the role models for the IDL community, and enjoy some privileges not available to the Lower Tier.

      See also: 4.0, 5.3.

1.4. What is with the exclusive nature of the ladder? Think you all are a bunch of Descent Gods or something?

We wouldn't go as far as saying we are descent gods...but we play a lot. When you have put in so much time and dedication into one thing, naturally you want to "Get to Business" in your competitive games. Many ladders do not hold a strong, skilled member base...simply because anyone can join those ladders. The IDL provides a "safe haven" for the veteran's competitive needs, in an arena that is managed by the players themselves.

1.4.1. Isn't IDL just another clan?

IDL is not a clan. Although many of our members do belong and participate in various clans and organizations...the IDL is a strict Ladder. Every man/woman for themselves. The exclusive part is a reality. There are ladders on the net that provide competitive services to every descent player that signs up. The IDL is only for those who think they are really good, to some extent, and want to compete on a "higher" level than a ladder filled with rank guarders and inexperienced players.

1.4.2. Where do I sign up?

First, READ THE RULES by hitting the "Rules" link on the left frame. When you are done with this, hit the "Apply" link on the left frame. Then fill in your nickname (do NOT use clan codes or odd characters in your nickname: ie, pick "Nickname", not "-=[???]=-Nickname"), a password, and a VALID e-mail address. Finally, hit the "Submit Application" button and you will be placed in the applicants list. You must now get 5 votes from TOP 20 LOWER TIER players within 14 days.

      See also: 2.0, Recommended: 2.1.1.

1.5. Where can I get many of the more popular levels played for IDL matches?

Single Authors:
Spaz's levels (Athena, Minerva, Nysa, Io, Eris, Manes, etc) can be found at his site.
Karash's levels (Elegies (with NuKe), Mementomori, Standard 1, etc) can be found at his site.
Sirian's levels (Greenland, Rose, Siblings series, etc) can be found at his site.
Vander's levels (Pulling Teeth, Burning Indika, etc) can be found at Sickone's site OR his site.
Nirvana's levels (Vamped, The Dojo, Nocturnal, etc) can be found at Sickone's site.

Collections:
Descentia has many IDL levels.
Zappafan's site does as well.
Planet Descent has many of the levels played for IDL, plus a huge collection of other good levels.

NOTE: These sites contain many of the levels that are played on IDL. Because your site is not here does not mean you don't have good levels, it just means they aren't heavily played on the IDL. If you think your site does have levels that are played a lot on the IDL and you are not listed, notify us and we will add you to the list, if appropriate.

1.6. I want to find IDL players, but many of them aren't on Kali or PXO a lot... where else can I go?

IRC #300baud on EFnet is usually full of IDL players. You can go there to chat, look for matches, or just plain IDLe ;)

2.0. Applicant FAQ

2.1. I applied to the IDL a couple of hours ago...why can I not see myself on the listings?

Well, you haven't been accepted into the ladder system yet. It takes 5 recommendations from members in the top 20 ranks on the Lower Tier. After you have been accepted, then you may record matches with other members. You can still seek out top 20 players and play them for the simple purpose of trying to get votes.

2.1.1. I applied recently, but today my application is not on the page...whats up with that?

Go back and re-read the rules of applying (click "Rules" on left frame). If you used an erroneous nickname (ie "-=[???]=-Nickname" instead of "Nickname"), you will be removed. If you did not enter a valid e-mail address, you will be removed. At the end of 14 days if you haven't been voted onto the ladder, you will also be removed. You may, however, keep adding yourself to the list.

      See also: 1.4.2.

2.1.2. Why can I not report matches?

Applicants do not get any of the benefits of the ladder because they are just that: "applicants". You will not be able to report (or engage) matches until you have been voted onto the IDL. You can however find top 20 Lower Tier members and request games for votes to get onto the ladder (although, keep in mind that they are not REQUIRED to play you).

      See also: 2.1.

2.1.3. How many votes do I need to get onto the ladder?

You need 5 votes from 5 different top 20 Lower Tier members within 14 days of signing up to the ladder. If this condition is not met, you will be removed from the applicants list. You may, however, keep adding yourself to the list.

      See also: 1.4.2.

2.1.4. Why do most of the Lower Tier players tell me they can't vote, or they don't have enough votes?

Only the top 20 players in the Lower Tier can vote or nominate applicants to be on the IDL. They are allowed to vote their support for only 3 applicants at a time, so it's possible they have no available votes to cast for you.

      See also: 1.4.2.

2.1.5. Why won't any of the Upper Tier players recommend me?

Only the top 20 players in the Lower Tier can vote or nominate applicants to be on the IDL.

      See also: 1.4.2.

2.2. Can I get to Upper Tier without going through the Lower Tier first?

No. The Upper Tier is reserved for those pilots who have proven themselves time and again on the Lower Tier, and demonstrated the skills, attitude and level diversity commensurate with Upper Tier standards. If you are already a dominant player and have played often with Upper Tier players, it shouldn't be long before you are promoted. Don't feel as if you should be voted up immediately however, as promotion is completely up to the Upper Tier. If you don't know any of them, it will be harder as they will need to get an idea of your skills and attitude.

      See also: 6.1.3.

3.0. LT FAQ

3.1. I was put up for Upper Tier promotion in the regulate page, why am I still lower tier?

You are still in the lower tier because you must first get the required votes to be considered elegible for the Upper Tier. You must get 5 FOR votes PLUS one FOR for every 5 active Upper Tier Players over 10 (a maximum of 10 votes needed). Each AGAINST negates a FOR.

      See also: 6.1.

3.1.1. How do I get Upper Tier status?

To get Upper Tier status, you must first be in the top 5 of the Lower Tier. Next, a regulate measure must be started by an Upper Tier member for you to be promoted. You must get 5 FOR votes PLUS one FOR for every 5 active Upper Tier members over 10 (a maximum of 10 votes needed). Each AGAINST negates a FOR. The vote total you will require is the number listed on the Regulate page at the time of your nomination. That number will not change regardless of changes in the number of active UTs. If your nomination fails, and you are nominated again, the new measure will be based on the number of active UTs at that time.

      See also: 6.1, Recommended: 6.2.7.

3.2. Can I play matches with Upper Tier opponents?

Yes, however, they will not be counted toward your kill ratios and percentages. They are exhibition matches, and the win/loss will be shown in your exhibition win/loss stats (the numbers in parentheses next to your wins/losses). This is a good way to prove to the Upper Tier that you think you might be ready to join their ranks. If you have ambitions of someday joining the First Tier, don't wait until you gain high rank to begin playing exhibition matches.

      See also: 5.3.

3.2.1. I won 3 games with Upper Tier players, but my stats didn't improve, why?

Exhibition matches do not affect your stats in any way. The only benefit that you get is the exhibition games on your record. Defeating First Tier players or even playing close, competitive matches with them, is the surest way to build your reputation on the ladder.

      See also: 5.3.

3.2.2. I tried to initiate a vendetta with a Upper Tier player, but it won't let me.. why not?

Vendettas may only be played between members on the same tier.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4.

3.2.3. I wanted to play a UT Gauntlet match, why can't I?

The UT Gauntlet (like the name implies) is strictly for UT members only, and is there to promote UT level diversity and UT rivalries.

      See also: 1.3.1.

3.3. I keep trying to retire, but it won't let me.. is there something I am doing wrong?

In order to retire, you must be an Upper Tier member. Lower Tier members do not enjoy the advantage of this. Instead they can quit and reapply later, and be back on the Lower Tier in no time (if they honestly belong there), or else rank drop themselves and remain on the ladder at lower ranks but inactive, until ready to resume playing.

3.4. 3.4. How do I vote for an applicant?

You must go to the applicants list (click "applicants" on left frame) and click on the name of the person you wish to vote for (or hit nominate to "volunteer" someone). Enter your callsign, password, and reason, then hit the "Submit Recommendation" button.

4.0. UT FAQ

4.1. I am an Upper Tier member, and I cannot recommend players to the IDL...whats up with that?

Upper Tier members are only responsible for promoting top 5 second tier members up to the Upper Tier. This hopefully reduces the amount of hounding that the top players get from applicants. The IDL got a lot of mail telling us that they were tired of being asked for a match, and for votes, from applicants. First Tier players have other responsibilities, so we have given the responsibility for controlling new admissions to the cream of the Second Tier.

      See also: 6.1.

4.2. I am an Upper Tier member and retired, why can't I vote on the regulate page?

The retired members of the Upper Tier are not allowed to vote simply for the reason that they are retired. They have chosen to be inactive on the ladder for one reason or another, so are not technically considered part of the ladder (except the UT mailing list) again until they unretire. The retire feature was added for those Upper Tier members who had to go away for a period of time, or were just plain taking a break from descent and did not want to go through the hassle of siging up, going through the Lower Tier, and being promoted again. It's basically another "bonus" of being an Upper Tier member.

      See also: 4.5, 4.7.

4.3. I just got promoted to Upper Tier, what happened to all my stats?

When you get promoted to the Upper Tier, all your Lower Tier stats are cleared, and you start fresh. You can still go back to see your Lower Tier match history by clicking on "Profile" in the left frame, then "View Lower Tier History" at the bottom of your profile.

4.3.1. How do I see my Lower Tier record?

Click on "View/Edit" under "Profile" in the left frame. Enter your callsign and password, and then click the link that says "Lower Tier History" at the bottom of your profile page.

4.4. Can I play matches with Lower Tier opponents?

Yes, but they are exhibition matches and do not count toward your ratios and UT statistics. These matches prove to the Lower Tier, the Upper Tier, and yourself that you are indeed a pilot of First Tier caliber, and gives Second Tier pilots an opportunity to test their skills against one of "the best".

      See also: 5.3.

4.4.1. I won 3 games with Lower Tier players, but my stats didn't improve, why?

Exhibition matches do not affect your stats in any way. The only benefit that you get is the exhibition wins on your record, and the entertainment of playing a recorded match.

      See also: 5.3.

4.4.2. I tried to initiate a vendetta with a Lower Tier player, but it won't let me.. why not?

Vendettas may only be played between members on the same tier.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4.

4.5. How do I retire?

To retire, hit "View/Edit" under "Profile" on the left frame. Enter your callsign and password, and hit the retire option at the bottom of the profile edit area. Enter your password again, hit retire, and you will be retired.

4.5.1. Why would I want to retire?

If you plan on taking a break from descent for three weeks or more, or life gets in the way of your online time, it is best to retire. While not letting you participate in the regulate activities and matches, etc, this will insure that you will not be removed for inactivity. When you decide to unretire, you will be placed in lowest rank on the Upper Tier.

4.5.2. What benefits do I get for retiring?

Retirement means that you cannot be removed from the ladder for inactivity. This way if you leave for a long time, you won't be kicked from the Upper Tier, and your hard won match history will be preserved. Keep in mind, however, that if you DO get removed for inactivity, you WILL have to go through the whole process of applying and getting voted back, as you did not take advantage of the retirement option.

      See also: 6.5.

4.5.3. Can I unretire everytime I want to vote, and then re-retire when I'm done?

No. This is considered an abuse of the privilege, and there is now a limit of 20 days that you must be retired/unretired in order to unretire/retire, respectively.

      See also: 4.6, 6.1.

4.6. How do I vote on a regulate measure?

To vote on a regulate measure, go to the regulate page (hit "Regulate" on the left frame). To begin a new measure, click "[Initiate a new Regualate Measure]" at the top of the page, enter your callsign, password, type of regulate measure, member to vote on, and your reason. Then hit the "submit vote" button. To vote for a measure that has already been started, find the measure you wish to vote on and click the "Caste/Change Your Vote" link right below the measure. Add your password, callsign, and reason, and then hit "Submit". Remember to make sure that there is not already a measure posted for the action you intend to initiate.

      See also: 6.1.

4.7. What is the UT mailing list?

The UT mailing list is reserved for private UT discussion on regulate measures and various other things having to do with the ladder. Although you are not required to, every active UT member is expected to participate in it.

      See also: 1.3.1.

4.7.1. Can I share what goes on in the UT mailing list with all my LT friends?

No. The idea of the list being the "UT list" is there for a reason. This list is for the UT to explain why they may have voted in a certain way to the other UT members, to discuss measures they think are needed to see what other UTs think before initiation action on the Regulate page, and to discuss ladder matters that don't necessarily concern non-members and LT members, or to keep information in "one place" until the time comes when it needs to be shared with the rest of the ladder. It is "for your eyes only" material.

5.0. Match/Rules FAQ

5.1. What happens if I am up 21-19 and I kill my opponent, but die in stray fire, kill myself, or die in his explosion a few seconds later?

The game continues. If you die by your opponents fire after he dies, he still had to have shot it BEFORE he died. It is your responsibility to dodge all the incoming shots, whether the "final blow" has been dealt or not. If he explodes on you, it's your fault for getting too close when you have already won the game. And finally, if you suicide, its also no ones fault but your own (this of course should not be taken to extreme measures however. If you are talking after the game and accidentally hit your missle button thereby killing yourself, it doesn't count - remember, always be reasonable).

5.1.1. What happens if I get the final kill, but die in the process? Does his extra kill/my suicide count?

The kill counts. If you die by his shots, explosion, or suicide it's no ones fault but your own (apply this within reason - accidentally suiciding 5 minutes later while your typing obviously wouldn't count). If it was a suicide, the game continues, otherwise just report the score, counting that kill with your opponents score.

5.2. What are matches?

Matches are the concept that the entire IDL is built upon (if there weren't matches, there wouldn't be an IDL). Matches are a set up game in an agreed upon level/game between two IDL members. You play until one of you reaches 20 with a barrier of two kills (ie 20-19 is not the end of the game, they would have to win by 21-19 now, etc). The winner of a "normal" match (non exhibition, vendetta, or gauntlet) gets the place of the defeated, and the defeated moves down one place on the ladder.

      See also: 1.0, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.1. How do I initiate a match?

To initiate a match, simply find another IDL member and ask them for a match. If you find an Upper Tier member, you will have to play an exhibition match. You then agree on a level and a game and commence the match. Match dodging is NOT allowed, however, you also need to be flexible. If someone tells you they are currently busy or just not in the mood to play, then request to schedule a match for later.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.2. How do I report a finished match?

To report a match, first both players must agree on the score and conditions of the match, after which the loser will post followed by the winner. Hit "Submit Match" which is right under "Matches" on the left frame. Fill in your score, your opponents score, the opponent you played, your callsign, your password, the game played, the level, your comment (please do not complain here - it will hurt your reputation if you do) and finally specify if it was your or your opponent's home level. The winner will get a verification code in the mail. The winner then selects "Verify Report" and enters his callsign, password, and e-mail verification. The winner also has the option to kill the match (which will force the loser to repost it, because you did not agree. To kill the match, select "Reject Report" instead of "Verify Report" and enter your callsign, password, e-mail verification, and why you refused the match. Then hit "reject match"). Then hit "submit match". The winner reserves the right to decline accepting a forfeit for any reason. It is generally considered uncool to force any opponent to forfeit a match when they consider the game unplayable for technical reasons -- particularly early in the game.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.5.

5.2.3. I just lost a match and tried to report, but it wont let me, why?

If you are an applicant, you are not allowed to even play matches. You are not allowed to report two matches against the same opponent within a 24 hour period (unless in vendetta with them), so if you rematch somebody you will have to wait until 24 hours elapse since the previous report. If you are in a vendetta or UT gauntlet, you must wait until you are done to report the match (you are NOT allowed to play matches during a vendetta or gauntlet however, as they are serious matters). You also cannot report a match if you are retired. If you meet none of these conditions, please contact the staff and they will help you.

      See also: 2.0, 4.5, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.4. I just beat an opponent, but he didn't report the match, and instead quit!..do I get the match?

No, unfortunately you do not get the match unless it is completed 100%. If someone does that to you, just be wary of that person and don't play them again. Also, do not post to the forum or come complaining to #300baud about this matter, as it will get you nowhere. If someone becomes disillusioned with the ladder to a point of quitting, while playing with you, you may or may not have contributed to their leaving, so you get no credit. Someone quitting the IDL in this way is a lose/lose situation for us all.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.2.

5.2.5. What if I don't want to play the game that my opponent desires?

Either agree or don't play. If there is not total agreement on the game, then the match should be cancelled (this should not be used as a tool to match dodge. If you are only willing to play one game, unless you don't have the necessary components/machine to play one of the other games, you may need to re-evaluate why you joined the IDL).

5.2.6. What if I don't want to play the level that my opponent desires?

Either agree or don't play. If there is not total agreement on the level, then the match should be cancelled (this should not be used as a tool to match dodge. If you are only willing to play one level, you may need to re-evaluate why you joined the IDL).

5.2.7. What if I hate long packets and d1 "lag" and would rather use d1x, but my opponent refuses?

Either agree or don't play. If there is not total agreement on which version of d1 to use, then the match should be cancelled.

5.2.8. My opponent made a mistake in his match report. How do I get this corrected?

You use the game ID to Reject the report. The opponent will be emailed with your explanation of what was wrong in your view, and will have to resubmit the match. You may reject as many times as necessary if the correct info is not reported; however, abuse of this feature will not be tolerated.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.9. My opponent refused to complete our match, and decided to forfeit. I don't want any forfeits on my record. Do I have to verify this match?

No, the winner reserves the right to refuse a forfeit in any situation.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.10. My opponent whined in his match comment, and I resent it. Do I have to verify this match?

Yes. You are allowed to reject a match report only if the game or level name or scores are in error. And you may only cancel a match if the opponent refused to complete the game, and you prefer to cancel it rather than take a forfeit.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.11. I made a mistake on my match report but my opponent verified it anyway, what can I do?

You'll have to live with it. Take care to report correctly, and this won't happen. When you win, take time to read the data in the verification email to make sure it's right; don't just rubber stamp the report without even looking at it.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.12. I beat someone who reported then immediately quit the ladder before I could verify the match result, what can I do?

This is unfortunate, but if they withdraw from IDL before the match has been verified, there is nothing you can do; just as there is nothing you can do if they quit and refuse to report. If they left you in the lurch by mistake, they can reapply and if voted back on, give you the game you are due at that time. Otherwise, write it off to experience and move on.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6, 6.2.

5.2.13. I lost the verification email (or never got one). What should I do?

View your profile. There is an option to check on any unverified matches you may have pending.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.2.14. I tried to report but it says I have a match pending. What is it talking about?

In some cases, you cannot report a new match until a previous match is verified. Check your profile to see if any matches you played lately remain unreported, then check with the appropriate opponent and/or verify the pending matches.

      See also: 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.

5.3. What are exhibition matches?

Exhibition matches are matches that take place between one Lower Tier and one Upper Tier member. They do not affect either's stats, and are recorded as an exhibition win/loss (in parenthases next to "normal" wins/losses). They are scored and played just like any "normal" match, except that no ladder spots are changed and no awards are at stake.

      See also: 5.2.

5.3.1. How do I initiate an exhibition match?

An exhibition match is initiated by a member of one Tier asking a member of the other Tier for a match. They must both agree on level/game, and match dodging is NOT allowed. If your opponent is not in the mood to play, or is occupied, simply schedule the match for later. The winner gets nothing but an exhibition win.

      See also: 5.2.1.

5.3.2. How do I report a finished exhibition match?

An exhibition match is reported just like a "normal" match. First both players must agree on the score and conditions of the match, after which the loser will post followed by the winner.

      See also: 5.6, 6.5.

5.4. What is a vendetta?

A vendetta is a special set of three matches that is to be taken very seriously. You cannot play ANY other matches while you are locked in a vendetta, and the challenged does NOT have to accept. Vendettas also cannot be initiated across Tiers. While in a vendetta, both members play the next three matches in a row. The loser drops 15 ranks, while the winner takes the losers position (if he wasn't already ahead of the loser on the ladder). Vendetta matches can take place all in the same day (unlike previously), however, you cannot report more than one vendetta match per hour. After the vendetta, you cannot engage in another vendetta for at least two weeks. We recommend you agree on terms before you begin vendetta play, and in cases where you do not already have an ongoing rivalry with your intended vendetta opponent, you may want to discuss the idea of a vendetta with them before issuing your challenge. Once you are in Vendetta, it must be completed if at all possible.

      See also: 5.2.

5.4.1. How do I initiate/accept/refuse a vendetta?

To initiate a vendetta, you must click "Vendetta" on the left frame. Then choose the "Challenge/accept vendetta" link. Fill in your callsign, password, the opponent, and a remark, then hit "submit challenge/acceptance". Accepting the vendetta is done in the same manner. To refuse a vendetta, hit "refuse vendetta" instead of "challenge/accept vendetta".

      See also: 5.5.1a.

5.4.2. How do I report a finished vendetta match?

A vendetta match is reported just like a "normal" match. First both players must agree on the score and conditions of the match, after which the loser will post followed by the winner.

      See also: 5.2.2, 5.6, 6.5.

5.4.3. How many ranks do I drop if I lose a vendetta?

Losing a vendetta will result in you dropping 15 ranks (NOT 5 like it used to be) - a vendetta is a serious thing, and shouldn't be taken lightly.

5.4.4. Can I play matches if I initiated a vendetta and my opponent has not responded?

No, you cannot play matches as long as the vendetta remains either unanswered or unfinished. Usually it is a good idea to tell the person you wish to vendetta FIRST, or tell them that you have issued the vendetta. This will save you from needlessly waiting for them to reply, because they didn't even realize you had challenged them on the vendetta page.

      See also: 5.2.3.

5.4.5. Can I play other matches during a vendetta?

No. No non-vendetta matches may be played while your are engaged in a vendetta. Vendettas are not to be taken lightly, therefore the rules surrounding them are very strict and upheld.

      See also: 5.2.3.

5.4.6. I just lost a vendetta, but I only dropped 8 ranks... whats up with that?

The vendetta will drop you according to the rank you carried when you INITIATED the vendetta. The winner will also get that rank. If you happened to lose a few ranks during your vendetta (someone lower than you beat someone higher than you), then this will happen. The inverse is also true if you have actually gained ranks (other vendettas, retirements, etc).

5.4.7. I reported my first vendetta game, and right after I tried to post my second. It didn't work! Why not?

You must wait at least one hour between posting vendetta matches. This has no exceptions, so do not bother asking about it.

5.4.8. I lost/won my first two vendetta games, but for some reason the vendetta doesn't seem to be over, why?

All three matches of a vendetta MUST be played, whether or not one player won the first two. Vendettas are serious, treat them as such. Your honor is on the line, and the third match still counts as an IDL match; play it to win, the same as you would any normal match.

5.5. What is a UT gauntlet?

A UT gauntlet is a new mode of play where a challenger issues a challenge that does not have to be accepted (similar to vendetta). Only one match is played, and it is played in the challenger's selected level and conditions, which are issued with the challenge. It may not be either player's home level. This was made purely to promote UT level diversity and UT rivalries, and is for UT players only. The winner gets nothing more than a match won (and a new rank if applicable) IF he was the challenger. If the challengee wins, he gets the win, the rank (if applicable), and a medal on his profile.

      See also: 3.2.3.

5.5.1a. How do I initiate/accept/refuse a UT gauntlet?

A UT gauntlet is not unlike a vendetta. To initiate a gauntlet, you must click "Gauntlet" on the left frame. Then choose the "challenge/accept gauntlet" link. Fill in your callsign, password, the opponent, remark, level, and conditions. Then hit "submit challenge/acceptance". Accepting the gauntlet is done in the same manner. To refuse a gauntlet, hit "refuse gauntlet" instead of "challenge/accept gauntlet".

      See also: 5.4.1.

5.5.1b. I've agreed to play a gauntlet match with someone. Does it matter which one of us issues the challenge?

Yes. The person who picks the level is the challenger and posts the challenge. Players do not "agree" on a gauntlet level. One player picks and the other accepts the challenge or not, on those terms.

5.5.2. How do I report a finnished UT gauntlet match?

A UT gauntlet match is reported just like a "normal" match. First both players must agree on the score and conditions of the match, after which the loser will post followed by the winner.

      See also: 5.2.2, 5.6, 6.5.

5.5.3. I won my UT Gauntlet match, why didn't I get a medal?

Only the challenged player is eligible for the medal. The challenger gets the benefit of choosing the conditions, so he has the advantage. A medal is only given to the player who is disadvantaged, should he overcome that and "school" his opponent in that player's hand-picked level.

      See also: 5.2.2, 5.6, 6.5.

5.6. When am I supposed to report a match?

Everyone is required to report matches, both accurately and promptly. Both sides must first agree, and then the loser submits first. Then the winner will get e-mail verification and submits using the verfication code. The winner also has the option to kill the match and make the loser repost in case there was error. He can also decline a forfeit by killing the match.

      See also: 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5.

5.7. What if there is unplayable lag/loss during a match? What should I do?

If you observe technical problems early during a match, you are entitled to call a halt to the game. The rules are very clear: up to and including scores of 5 points, either player may cancel a match due to unplayable conditions (such as very high pings, data loss or bursting, or other technical problems that range beyond the tolerable). From 6 points on, BOTH players must agree to terminate, or the match will continue. If there is a problem, you should not wait to complain about it; speak up immediately. If you wait too long, your fate will be in your opponent's hands. When a dispute arises, it can be difficult to determine who, if anybody, is dealing in bad faith, so the rule is designed to be as fair to both sides as possible, giving the benefit of the doubt (and the right to decide) to the complaining player up to 5 points, and thereafter protecting the rights of the other player. If a halt is called, you should make an effort to try again to play another time, or to work around the problem if possible.

5.8. What if my opponent complains of lag/loss during a match? What should I do?

If your opponent claims that the game appears to him to be unplayable, due to technical problems, then your options depend on how soon he raises his complaint. The rules are very clear: up to and including scores of 5 points, either player may cancel a match due to unplayable conditions (such as very high pings, data loss or bursting, or other technical problems that range beyond the tolerable). From 6 points on, BOTH players must agree to terminate, or the match will continue. So if the complaint is raised immediately, you must stop. You are allowed to ask what's wrong, but you cannot require the match to continue. If you are in the middle of the game, you should be willing to compromise on finding a solution. If no compromise can be worked out and your opponent refuses to complete the match, he is obliged to forfeit from his current score and report the loss. Making someone forfeit due to bad gaming conditions is generally frowned upon; if there is a problem, do your best to work it out. Unresolvable match disputes usually harm the reputations of both sides, because it means either the complaining player was making a false complaint to get out of a possible loss, or the other player insisted on counting points scored not because of skill, but because of technical issues. And since no one can be sure which (it's one player's word against another) then both players can expect to be viewed in a bad light.

6.0. Ladder FAQ

6.1. What is the regulate page for?

The regulate page is for two things. Firstly, it's the only method through which a Lower Tier member can be promoted to Upper Tier. Secondly, it is the method through which the Upper Tier administers justice to those who violate the rules of the ladder or cause harm to the IDL. These methods of enforcement vary greatly, as do the "crimes" that may lead to their use.

      See also: 2.0, 3.1, 4.6.

6.1.1a. What happens if I get kicked?

If you are kicked, you are immediately removed from the ladder and your profile is deleted. You are free to re-apply at any time. If kicked for disciplinary reasons, the Upper Tier will probably be "keeping an eye on you" if/when you choose to reapply. It is probably best if you "lay low" for a few weeks at this point. If kicked for performance reasons, try to understand that membership on the IDL is a privilege, not a right, and that we must maintain standards of competitiveness for all our members. You are encouraged to work on your skills and performance and reapply again when you can better hold your own in the fierce arena of IDL competition. First Tier members may be willing to help you work on your skills if you ask them.

      See also: 2.0.

6.1.1b. What happens if I get kicked for 45 days?

If you are kicked for 45 days, you are immediately removed from the ladder and your profile is deleted. You cannot re-apply until midnight on the day after 45 days have passed since you were removed. This is the most serious penalty possible short of a permanent ban. You are exiled for 45 days and you should take that time to reflect on what you have done and why you joined the IDL to begin with, as well as how you will conduct yourself in the future if you wish to reapply when your Kick-45 expires. Any further serious incidents after a Kick-45 will most likely lead directly to a permanent Ban, so you are advised to take this measure seriously.

      See also: 2.0.

6.1.2. What happens if I get banned?

Banning means exactly that: BANNED. Don't ever expect to come back to the ladder. Banning is reserved only for the most serious of offenses.

6.1.3. What happens if I get probated?

A probation is really just a wake up call. The player gets dropped to the bottom of his tier and suspended from play for two weeks. They cannot play any matches during that time. If you get probated, expect the Upper Tier to be "keeping an eye on you" for a little while.

6.1.4. What happens if I get demoted?

Demotion occurs because of two reasons, and can only happen to an Upper Tier player. The first reason being the player has lost his "touch" with the game, and it would be best if he got it back by playing in the Lower Tier for a while. The second is because the Upper Tier member has either shown himself flimsy with his responsibilities to the ladder, or he did something that was out of line, and the rest of the Upper Tier members feel he should be dropped to the Lower Tier for the time being.

6.1.5. What happens if I get promoted?

Promotions occur when a Lower Tier player is seen as being skilled enough by the Upper Tier members to join the ranks of the Upper Tier. Promotion is the only regulate measure you WANT to happen to you.

      See also: 2.2, 3.1.

6.2. What is the forum for?

The forum is a general IDL information source and "chat" area. All members and non-members are encouraged to post to the forum, however, whining and flame wars are prohibited.

6.2.1. What is the IRC channel 300baud for?

#300baud on EFnet is for general chat of IDL and non-IDL members (although, it is the IDL channel). Whining and flame wars are prohibited. You can get more info by clicking "#300baud" on the left frame.

6.2.2. Can I advertise on the IDL forum/#300baud?

You may advertise updates to or new descent related sites. The forum and IRC channel are usually pretty lenient, however, neither invite useless spam and it will not be tolerated.

6.2.3. Can I warn the upper tier about other ladder members on the forum/#300baud?

No. If you wish to warn the Upper Tier to watch out for another player, please bring it to Upper Tier players privately. Putting it on the forum and repeatedly spamming it on the IRC channel is NOT a way to get us to listen. It hasn't worked before, it won't work now, and it will harm your reputation.

6.2.4. Can I cause a fuss about an unreported or misreported match on the forum/#300baud?

No, you should first attempt to resolve the issue with the opponent in question. Talk to them, work it out. If this is not possible, take your complaint to the staff privately. Nothing will be done until this happens.

6.2.5. Forum/IRC wars are fun, are they allowed on the IDL forum/#300baud?

No, repeatedly causing "wars" will likely get you banned from the channel and/or forum, or lead to Regulate measures. Stupidity will not be tolerated.

6.2.6. When I think I am being misrepresented by an Upper Tier member on the regulate page, should I post about it on the forum/#300baud?

No. This is a sure-fire way to harm your reputation with the entire Upper Tier. You should never attempt to retaliate publicly against any vote cast by an Upper Tier member. If the issue concerns your nomination, do not attempt to lobby Upper Tier members with complaints about the votes of other members. In some cases it has been determined that a player was not ready for promotion because of this. The votes of the Upper Tier players are their own, and if you don't like them, it's too bad. All you can do is change what they don't like and hope for the best, or show your stuff to other UTs who haven't weighed in yet in hopes of gaining their support. You do not need unanimous support from the First Tier to be promoted, and if you are up for discipline, you should discuss your case privately with each individual UT.

      See also: 2.2, 3.1, 6.1.

6.2.7. I am in top 5 lower tier and I think I am good enough to be Upper Tier. Should I let the Upper Tier know this on the forum/#300baud?

No, the Upper Tier keeps track of things for themselves. When an Upper Tier player thinks you are ready, a vote will be started. Then, and only then. If you want to draw attention to yourself, seek exhibition matches, continue to perform well against your Lower Tier peers, and be considerate of others in your dealings.

      See also: 2.2, 3.1, 6.1.

6.2.8. I think of myself as a regular sherlock... can I use my skills to impersonate someone on the forum?

No, impersonating others on the forum is not wise. Anyone who posts on the forum can be identified through their IP. If you take it upon yourself to try to wreck another person's rep by impersonating them, you will suffer the consequences.

6.3. What is a home level?

A home level is a member's home. It's "their turf" where they are on their best game. You just don't mess with them there, otherwise you are likely asking for trouble. If you beat a player in their home level, you get a busdriver award, because you took them to school. Home levels also have to be exact to be home levels. If someone's home is X level with X homers, then that, and only that is their home.

6.3.1. What is a busdriver award?

A busdriver award is a medal that you get for beating another member in their home level. The other member must be on the same tier, and it must be their exact home level.

6.3.2. I just beat someone in an No Homer version of their home level but he didnt give me a Busdriver Award. How can I fix this?

You cannot, because technically that was not their home level. If their home normally includes the homers, then the no homer version does not count as their home level.

6.4. How can I drop 15 ranks?

You can drop yourself 15 ranks by clicking "View/Edit" on the left frame under "Profile". Enter your callsign and password. At the end of the profile edit page, click the "Self Initiated 15 Rank Drop" link. Enter your password again and you will be dropped 15 ranks.

6.4.1. Why would I want to drop myself 15 ranks?

If you don't plan on being around for a week or so (especially Lower Tier, since you cannot retire) and you are ranked high, this may be a good thing. People don't like when someone sits in the top 5 and never plays. Also, you can use it to get rid of some of the heat for matches that you get when in the higher ranks. If your availability is going to be low for a while, dropping ranks is the courteous thing to do; you can always earn your old rank back with a single victory. If you are on the Upper Tier but going to be inactive for a while, you have the option of dropping ranks instead of retiring, so that you may continue to play matches on occasion and/or participate on the Regulate page.

6.5. I accidently was expired from the ladder, can I just have my profile restored?

No, you must re-apply. If you haven't even had time to do something as simple as update your profile to avoid being kicked off, you must not have time for IDL. This goes for Lower Tier members as well as Upper Tier members. The Upper Tier members can also retire. If they do not, it is their own fault.

6.5.1. How do I withdraw my profile?

If for some reason you are not pleased, or you have real life getting in the way and you desire to leave us, you can click "Withdraw" under "Profile" on the left frame. Then enter your password and you will be withdrawn.

6.5.2. Can I have more than one profile?

No, having more than one profile is prohibited. This will result in at LEAST a kick, if not more.

6.5.3. How do I stay active so my profile doesn't expire?

There are only two things you can do so that your profile does not expire, and these are spelled out clearly in the rules. You must either play a recorded IDL match, or edit/update your profile. Performing either of these actions resets your time to 45 days. If you are an Upper Tier member, you may also retire to the Inactive List, if you like. While inactive, you may not participate in any ladder activities.

7.0. Resources FAQ

7.1. What is the purpose of the IDL?

The IDL Mission Statement can be found by clicking Info on the left panel, then selecting the "Mission" option.

      See also: 1.0.

7.2. This is a nice site. Who put it together? Who maintains it?

The IDL Staff puts a lot of work into maintaining and growing the ladder -- all in their spare time, without pay. We do it for the love of the game and the players who play it. The Staff page lists all contributing members. Click Info on the left panel and you will see the Staff link.

7.3. What is the War Journal?

The IDL War Journal is a repository of War Stories concerning games played between IDL members.

7.3.1. Can I submit a story to the Journal?

If you are an IDL member, of either tier, then yes, you can submit a story. You should write it up in a text file or an email and send it to the Journal webmaster. Alternatively, you can seek out an IDL Staff Member on the net and, at their convenience, tell them your story, which they will forward to the Journal webmaster.

7.3.2. Which IDL matches are eligible for the Journal?

All of them. You can write a story about any match you've played. The Journal is particularly interested in your attempts to earn the busdriver award, however. For a story to be placed in the main pages, it must concern a game played in your opponent's home level. All other stories go into the catchall category of Memorable Matches. The Journal is even interested in unofficial "for fun" matches, IF played in your opponent's home level. Home levels are a big deal, and we want to highlight matches or games involving them.

      See also: 5.0, 6.3.

7.3.3. What if my opponent's home level does not have a review page?

The Journal is mainly about stories, not reviews. The reviews are bonus info to help those unfamiliar with the level understand the sort of tactical challenges someone at home in the level can present to their opponents, so the reader can better get a feel for what was transpiring. Therefore, no reviews will be posted without at least one accompanying War Story. If the level you played in has not yet been reviewed, please send us your story anyway. We'll put together a review for the level at the first opportunity and your story will be the highlight of the page!

7.3.4. Most of the names listed as having homes are UTs. Why aren't there more LTs listed? I'm in the LT, why aren't I listed here?

The War Journal is too complex to be automated. Everything is updated manually. Since some players change their home levels often, and others come and go from the ladder entirely, the Journal staff lacks the time to adjust the list of names on a weekly basis. Instead we have chosen to keep track of the UTs and the more prominent LTs (those at high ranks or with very long match history) and particularly the players who contribute stories to the Journal. If you are in the LT and would like to see your name listed beside your home level(s) then simply start sending us some stories on occasion. Or, if you are confident you won't be changing your home for some time, if ever, then contact the staff and we'll add you. The Journal is for everyone on the ladder.

7.3.5. I can't write as well as those other people. I'd be embarrassed to tell my stories.

Many if not most stories in the Journal have been edited for clarity. So you have nothing to be concerned about. Send in your stories anyway; we will polish up the structure for you so they shine as brightly as the others. Don't let a good story go to waste!

7.4. What is the Lounge?

The UT Lounge is a resource for First Tier players only.

      See also: 1.3, 4.0.

7.4.1. I can't access the Lounge, is it working properly?

Only First Tier players have access to the Lounge.

      See also: 1.3, 4.0.

7.4.2. What goes on in there anyway?

The Lounge has many features, including a table of statistics on LT players containing information that is not available elsewhere, and a page that handles voting for the monthly LT Recognition award.

      See also: 1.3.

7.5. What is the Championship Archive?

The IDL Championship Archive contains statistics and information on all players who have ever held the #1 rank on the ladder, and what they achieved during their reign. These records are updated manually.

7.6. Are the UT player statistics updated automatically?

No. They are tracked manually. Many of the statistics involve level names and other input that cannot be automated. The stats take about two to four hours a week to maintain, on average.

7.6.1. What does Level Diversity mean?

The Level Diversity table tracks how often and how many times UT players play matches on a level they have not previously competed in. Players are ranked by total number of new levels played. The diversity ratio tracks the percentage of matches in which a player has played on a level he has not ever played for a match previously. Players with large totals or high ratios are the most versatile, and generally compete at a high level in all situations. Players with very low totals or ratios tend to play the same group of levels over and over.

7.6.2. What do those winning streaks represent?

There are three kinds of streaks tracked in the stats. The first column records the player's longest win streak against only UTs. Any matches vs LTs that were played in between are ignored, even if they were lost. The second column records the player's longest win streak against only LTs. Any matches vs UTs that were played in between are ignored, even if they were lost. The third column represents consecutive wins vs all opponents -- the longest uninterrupted streak on the player's profile, without concern to which tier the opponents occupied.

7.6.3. I'm in the UT and I have multiple awards, why aren't I listed?

Only the awards earned vs UT opponents after a player was invited to the UT are counted here, and you must have at least two medals in one of the categories, or two championships, to qualify for the list.

7.7. My question wasn't covered in this FAQ. What can I do?

Seek out a First Tier player or IDL Staff member and ask them your question and they will try to assist you. If your issue isn't covered already, we will probably add it to this FAQ.
