DDay '97 combines dogfighting and tunnel ratting in an environment where fighting tends towards the fast and furious kind. There are no secret areas, and the layout is fairly simple. Weapons are freely available throughout the level.

"Chippy is a great player and I like seeing him on #1. If you ever wondered why Parallax put weapons like the GAUSS or MERCs into Descent2, well, that's because Chippy mail-flodded them to put 'em in!! I think Chippy re-modelled his house to the shape of D-Day97."

"I was one of the first players to play Chipmunk in D-Day 97, his home level. It was not his home at that time, but you coulda fooled me. And since then he has gotten even better at it. He has played almost ALL the top players in this level, and only Kiln has ever beaten him here: by 2 points. Now that is what you call "the home field advantage" :)"

"Playing a level you don't know against a quality opponent who knows it well is a bad idea. I got reminded of that in D-Day. Nicely done, Chip."

"I once played Chippy in D-Day a long time ago over modem and from that point I knew he was good at it... Gauss everywhere, my frightened Pyro had nowhere to go... ** Screen fades to present ** .. Chip and I decided to do a vendetta, and when he called for my home level, I called for his. His first question was, "Are you sure?" And now I know why. Not only that, a few others said, "Really? Chip is really good at that level." I knew it would be a challenge. We got in the game and silence ruled the halls... I knew if I even hit one wall he would know where I was... He caught me off guard many times, and to this moment I still have no idea where he retreated to all the time (although I am quite sure that it was somewhere different each time)... Gauss and Mercs flying up my tailpipe isn't a pretty site, and unfortunately for my poor Pyro, I saw that more than once. Chip rocks D-Day."

"When I challenged Chippy to a vendetta, I was really scared. It was my first ever, yet he is an old pro at them. I knew I would have to give him a D2 modem game, prolly in his home level, and that I would lose badly. So all I wanted was to get the other two games in D1 and pray I could win em both. I was expected to win the Nysa game...Chip is tough, but his p2 266 (I think) isn't any match for the missile boater in Nysa....I just got a buncha homeys, hauled em, and hauled ass out of there. So I had my chance, my only chance, to win this thing in Minerva LH. And of all the time for my brother to try to ruin one of my games, he picks this one! He was such a punk! He was teasing me and pushing buttons on my keyboard while I was playin Chip. He got me killed. =/ Then I totally lost concentration and stuff. Couldn't get more kills, fell way behind. Then he finally left me alone, so I tried to calm down. When I finally did I camped a lot to catch up. =) And oh my GOD did I spread. I've never resorted to the spreadfire before. But I had to do something, and in modem, it REALLY works. So I creamed his ass with that...I killed him without losing more than 5 shields a few times. After my brother had bugged me, I thought all was lost...but it wasn't...I managed to pull that game off. I used that corner a lot, the one where all the doors are... There's the door to the tunnel, and the doors to the tunnels that lead to the reactor room, and if you look to your right, you see a fabulous energy bay! With the spread and a couple homeys, I survived. So after the Minerva LH game was over, I was so happy cause I had won the vendetta, I just took my lumps in the D-Day game. The slaughter was on modem, D2, dark ships....I didnt mind playing with dark ships...I knew I was screwed anyways. Set on Insane...All Gauss, All the Time. He used NO other primary than guass...He was just pelting me repeatedly. The only way I could ever get any hits was up close. When we got close in small rooms and stuff he would taste some plasma. In the dogfighting room, tunnels, etc...I had Guass a-la-Pelts. Running didnt work. Dogfighting didnt work. I had to try to stay close...but that didn't work well enough either. I couldn't see him because of the dark ships...so I just spewed everywhere and prayed for a hit. Oh MAN he creamed me. Note to you all: If you're gonna play Chipmunk in D-Day, make sure you have a voodoo2 and are God Himself." :)

"Our Vendetta took place at a small get together we had. Chip has a Nysa rivalry going on with me and has yet to beat me in that level. I was in the mood for a vendetta, so I challenged him...and to make it an easy level selection, I choose three of his all-time favorite levels...Io NH, Min2 and DDay 97. What I was thinking, I dunno... =) I was pretty well on in the Io game, Chip was having a hard time dealing with my fusion...and I took that one. The next level we played was Min2... Chip's pacifier level as I called it before he broadened his level range. That game started out with me in the lead early...then Chip started to mix it up real well...and four suicides by myself didn't help matters much. (Mental note: Stop firing the gauss when facing a wall). Once he passed me, I couldn't catch back up... check one on Chip's side. The third and final game was DDay 97. I hardly ever go into a game thinking I'm going to lose. If you do you normally will lose, and guess what. I lost! =) I took another early lead, but Chip is too strong in that level...and the score showed it. Anyway you look at it, it was a great set of games."

"DelCio is a really great player. He just doesn't flaunt his talents as much as he should. I never really knew DelCio until his mini-lan the week before the Nov fest. I saw him at the July fest, but didn't speak with him. I'm gonna miss his lans. :) Gauss is a powerful weapon on a lan. If you have the accuracy, you will do well. Delcio loves gauss and mercs, like someone else I know. And he obviously has great taste in home levels, too. ;) He's darn good on a lan."

"Chip and I have played SO many times, he has developed a bit of immunity to some of the mind games I pull off against most opponents. The older a rivalry gets, the more things tend to grow into a situation where it comes down more to who has the stronger will to win on that particular day. Anyway, at the autumn NY LAN in 97, Chip and I never got to play; so we made sure we did at the 98. We decided to do a big vendetta. We agreed to do each other's best levels, and I was feeling really ballsy, so I asked to play game 3 in what amounts to Chip's D1 home: Io No Homers. Chip and I have played Io a lot, and I have always been able to hold him off, or even to school him a time or two; so I felt good about my chances. I also felt good about playing D-Day; I knew the odds were stacked against me, but I was sure I could compete in there now that I finally had my own 3dfx for D2. I had challenged scream to the same sort of vendetta (two games in his homes, one in mine) and pulled it off. But it was not destined to go like that this time. Game 1 was played in my home, Fusion Rat's Paradise, and Chip has played so much of that with me that he's VERY competitive in there, now. So it was by no means a foregone conclusion; but it IS still my best level, and I came out on top once again. So we moved on to D-Day! And I got off to a really strong start. Maybe I was "on" or maybe Chip was just cold at the beginning; but I held to a one or two point lead up to a score of 7 6, and I felt I had control of the game. We had a network disconnect, tho (my cable got pulled) and upon resuming the match, Chip got a great start and smashed me several times, grabbing the lead. I did best in the dogfight room, if you can believe that. I actually outscored him there. But the tunnels... he OWNS those damn tunnels. Even when I caught him in one, he'd manage to limp away or turn the tables. He is just one NASTY gauss rat! It was over before I knew it. And even though our previous games there have ALL been closer, in the score, I actually felt better about this performance than all the previous ones combined. I came up short, but I tasted blood; I am going to find a way to win in there. Just you wait and see! :) Game 3 was all Chip. His first win over me in Io, and it was a biggie. I guess I just bit off more than I could chew on this one. Chip is a damn fine player and a great sport. I'll have to get my revenge some other day."

THIS
small level is one of the premiere arenas of the gauss dogfight. With
four gauss cannons and plenty of extra ammo, the gauss always dominates
play here. In combination with an oversupply of mercs and a handful of
homers, gauss brings death to runners. |
The layout of this level is surprisingly simple. There is one main room, and a wide, arcing tunnel that curves around from one end to the other, forming a huge D shape. There are two energy bays at the apex of the arc. Four narrow tunnels lie beneath the main D, and each connects to the D in a different spot. The reactor and exit are tucked to the side in a small room, but the reactor will start firing if you go in there, giving away your position. Mercs are deadly in these tunnels, and with so few sharp turns in this level, dodging homers can be surprisingly difficult. Judicious use of plasma or quads in the tunnels can earn you a quick kill, and beware of smarts down there as well.
The missiles tend to respawn in the tunnels nearest the reactor room, so you will have to venture down there a good bit or else allow your opponent to grab all the missiles - not a good move. Stealth plays an important role here, and ambushes can be lethal even at a distance, so try not to move around TOO much or you will often be the victim of a surprise attack. If you are taking on an opponent who lives in this level, bring your courage, your best aim, and your largest rabbit's foot: you are in for a tough fight.

is well lit, but visibility is low due to the textures selected. There is a
custom midi track included with the level that gives it a unique mood if
you play with midi on. Overall rating
