| MINERVA is the most played, and the most modified, anarchy level of all time. If you aren't familiar with Minerva, where have you been?? |

| Minerva "It was a revenge-match. I played him some weeks before (when he had something with his wrist...) and beat him. He didn't like that and wanted to beat me badly. Some time before we played the match I quit the IDL and re-joined it with my former nick "scream". He didn't know that and thought I was better ranked than him. HA! Bummer! During the match he asked me what rank I am. screamy-boy: "I just re-joined." Sonic: "DOH! So I'm fighting for NOTHING at all?" That took out his will to win. I know, I'm a mean youngster :)" |

| Minerva2 "I kicked it around with Diablo in Min2 one day. He had gotten some bad sunburn and didn't feel up to a match, so we played for fun, and that allowed me to experiment a bit. So I threw a few feints and pulled some punches as I let the gauss ammo build up and watched his moves. Once I started fighting back, the action got pretty thick. Almost half the kills came on respawn as a defeated player tried to rearm: we both guarded the spew pretty heavily. I'm still figuring this player out: we've only played a few times, and he has usually come out ahead in the end. I enjoyed the battle of wits and tactics, and look forward to next time." |

| Minerva2 "I took on ENDER in his very first IDL match, back in May of 97. Minerva2 was his home level, and I decided to accept the challenge of playing him there. I was still flying with keyboard controls ONLY, at that time, and I was SO badly outclassed in dogfights that I had to go totally ratty on him to stand any chance of winning. He got a 5-0 lead on me before I realized just HOW bad it was. His aim with the mercs was godly (he has since switched sticks, so his aim is not as good, but he is now much better in other regards) and he was very tough with the plasma. I went into a peekaboo game, studied his movements and patterns and tendencies, then decided on a hit-and-and run approach using a combination of gauss and spreadfire. (Yes, slow, sorry-ass D2 spreadfire). I could not triple chord at that time, so it was strictly a matter of outwitting him and outpredicting him that won me my first-ever Busdriver award. I did not camp at all: on keyboard you just can't aim with ANY precision, so your best move is to strafe well and try to get a few hits as you pass, then get the Hell out of there. And that's exactly what I did. With a ping of 400 or 500 ms, you can burn past someone before they have time to react to you, and that's what I did to ENDER time after time after time: stalk him, jump into his face with the spread, and then clear out; and use gauss to keep him from chasing me. Somehow it confounded him, and I got a huge win under circumstances where my controls had me at a staggering disadvantage. I scored a 20-10 run for a final score of 20-15. Despite the win, this was the game that proved to me that I could never compete on the IDL as a keyboard player, and that night I made my decision to buy a Sidewinder 3D Pro at the next opportunity. I only wish now that I had made that decision much MUCH sooner. =)" |

| Minerva2 "I've played Peart in almost everything. :) I think we've been playing since around March 97. He was my biggest rival on Case's for a while. I'm not sure what happened, I beat him when we first started playing, and then it was anybody's game for a while. Then he seemed to exceed my skills, and I didn't beat him again until I captured the #1 IDL rank from him in my home level, DDay. When I played him in Min2 (my original home) I was obviously not doing very well that day. The score was quite an embarrassment, the same as it was in my recent match with scream. *sigh* I don't know why I lost so bad to these guys in Min2. Scream did that thing with the gauss (Sirian's Ammo Control) and that kinda sucked, but even so I didn't do well. As for Peart, who knows. At 20-9 it seems apparent to me that SOMETHING went wrong. :)" |

| Minerva2 "In my first ever game with Peart, I offered to play him in his home level. I thought, "It's just Minerva. How bad can it be?" Well, for all the endless hours I have logged in Min2 (who hasn't?) I figured there was nothing left to learn about it. Well thank god it's not MY home level, or school would have been IN session. Never has someone been able to trap and kill me so easily when I've had an afterburner. It was like magic. His ability to press even the smallest advantage and turn it into a kill was astounding. I remember once when I hit afterburner and flew right through a wall of quad 6, happily taking about 63 damage just to get the Hell out of a spot he had already killed me in twice. I msged him saying "Fuck that. I'm not dying there again." He said, "LOL. Good choice." Can ya believe I nailed him direct 7 times with mercs to his none vs me, and he still won 20 11? :)" |

| Minerva2 "Wooo hooo! I beat Chippy on Minerva2! Celebrate people! Never EVER thought I'm going to win that one. I guess Chippy didn't like the "Ammo Control" on the gauss...which I've learned from that rat bastid, Master Splinter (aka Sirian)." |

| Minerva2 "Chipmunk was my first match coming back from my hiatus, so I knew it was going to be a tuffie for sure. On top of that, I played him in a level he is absolute master on. He wasn't #1 on Cases for so long without a reason, you know. Welp...we start off the game, Direct Modem game, and we see each other in the main room, and right then and there I knew I lost the match. It had dawned on me right then that Direct Modem games in D2 = Dark Ships. Since I don't have a 3dfx card, I was hosed. It was close up until around the 7th kill. That's when the gauss ammo finally got to a respectable level. When he used lasers or plasma, I was fine...but when that gauss came out...it was over. After the first kill (which I got) I told him of the problem on my end. He offered to cancel the match, but I refused...figuring it would be a great way to start off the IDL campaign with such a tuff match. If there had been bright ships, the scores would have been closer, I believe. It could have gone either way." |

| Minerva2 "Grax and I tangled twice in Minerva2 at the August 98 NYDP LAN. I played him on Saturday, wanting to beat him in my former home, his then-current home. I think it was me who said, Min2 (its the best level no matter what people say). The game was great, but I lost in the end. I played him like usual, just dying, respawning and charging back in to get the next kill. This strategy proved to be fatal. So, the rest of the day went by, and the next day we (I) decided to replay the game. Grax is VERY protective of the spew after a kill. It is not wise to run back into where you just died. So, I picked up on this, having played him the day before. I respawned and would avoid that spot like the plague until I mustered up enough weapons from around the level, then would return to fight. However, this was not enough. In order to win, I had to guard the weapons in return. I killed him several times trying to get his weapons, and in the end I was on top. He packed his bags and moved on out of Minerva2 after that game." :) |

| Minerva2 "EgaD is one of the few UTs to brave the challenge of taking me down in my exotic D2 home levels (without success -- but he tried). I owed him a match in one of his homes, so I was feeling lucky one day and asked for *gasp* a match in Minerva2. I was confident of victory because all my previous games with him had been a bit lopsided, but I almost got my lunch handed to me on this one. I started off ON FIRE. I mean everything I did was working. I got two or three "Patented PEARTMAN Kills" on him in the side energy bay and tunnel. (Yes I *still* remember the asskicking Peart gave me over there in my very first UT match. He smashed me like 4 times in that one spot -- a lesson I will never forget). So I am up on EgaD 7 2 and I've run out both gauss, I've got most of the missiles and I am in total control of the game. And someone is knocking on my door and I had to call time. A friend dropped something off on his way outta town on vacation. Didn't take long. 4 mins? So I come back, and EgaD asks if he is gettin any hits on me. And we chat, and I mention that, since he is being completely predictable in dogfights, hell no he's not hittin me (much) and that explains why I am doing well. I even pointed out exactly what he was doing wrong, when he asked about it. Not the smartest move on my part, while the game is still going. I mean, like, duh. Of course he is going to change up what I pointed out he was overdoing. And he did. And he also made the "Patented Sirian Decision" not to give up any more "Patented PEARTMAN Kills" on that one side. So my free ride was up. He boated those mercs a LOT, and they were his strength all game. He did as well as I did or better with the mercs. Score got to 11 5, then he got hot and got within 12 9, 13 10. It went to 18 12, and I started gettin a little restless, being overly aggressive in trying to just end it. (I mean, Min2 is NOT my favorite level, so I wanted to get it over with). EgaD just would not cooperate with my plan. He got some fine kills, and I limped out with a 20 16 win, low on shields. I never did recover my rhythm after that brief interruption. What's more, even though I pulled this one out thanks to a fast start, it definitely marked a coming of age for EgaD in my mind. I am now personally convinced he is bona fide UT, his record and past performances against me notwithstanding. Keep an eye on this kid. He is ready to make a breakthrough." :) |

| M INERVA is undoubtedly the most-played level in multi-player Descent history. This level was one of Spaz's early designs, and like other levels from that era (Tribute and Vesta come to mind) it has a deluge of homing missiles and smart missiles. No one is quite sure WHY Minerva became so opular, but I think part of it is the infamous tunnel that runs under the main room. Missiles tend to respawn in here a lot, and it's a favorite escape route of many runners. A few players even like to camp in there and make you come and get them, but this is just a gimmick that will only work in this one level, and only if a player can frustrate his opponent into attacking wrecklessly - not the sort of tactic that will get you to the top of the IDL. | ![]() |

Minerva has a lot of critics, but in actuality it was a good level in its
day and remains a quality specialty level for missile boaters who are
wicked with the homers. Those who favor Minerva (the original version)
are usually running slow PCs (P133 or less) and do not have to face the
tenacious tracking that makes homers so hard to dodge on a really fast PC.
Many do not realize just how much differently D1 homers behave on fast
machines, so they can't understand why some players resist or refuse to
play Minerva; and some DO know and are happy to take advantage of this if
you let them. If you own a fast PC and agree to play Minerva, you might
consider underclocking your system so that you can play on even grounds.
That is, unless you prefer the added challenge. :)

Minerva has one secret closet, located in the back corner of the reactor
room, where you will find the only fusion cannon. The typical Minerva
player has little experience with the fusion and often does not understand
its power or how to cope with it, so this is often the first place where
the experienced player will go. Overall
rating for this level is a modest 7.

| Because of greater balance between primaries and secondaries, a wider range of skills is required to succeed here. The LH version, on today's PCs, plays much like the original used to on a 486 or slow Pentium. If you haven't played Minerva D1 in a long time, you might actually find that you enjoy it in this quality variant. Overall rating: 8 | ![]() |
| More IDL players call Minerva2 home than any other level, D1 or D2. The lighting is uninspired, and carries a totally different mood than the original, but the visibility factor is fairly high. The fusion cannon has been replaced with a pack of smart mines, and unless they are removed from the game (a common practice) this is where you should try to head first (just like in D1). Overall rating: 8 |
| The brick texture from the original Minerva has been reconstructed here in the interest of total purity. The lighting job is superb, both in terms of the visibility and in recreating the precise feel of the original. Watching the glow move along the walls as you fire a fusion blast down a long hall is a thing of beauty. If you pay attention, you will realize that all the energy weapons except spreadfire give off light as the shots travel, and that this opens up some possibilities for a creative player. (Spread shots DO make light, but only upon impact). And if you ever play Minerva OW, you will quickly realize the importance of lighting cues. The lighting in this level greatly increases the stalking factor over ALL other versions of Minerva, and you will have to be more versed in stealth, as well as tunnel skills, to succeed here. | ![]() |
| This is the unknown gem of D2 Minerva versions, requiring much of players in terms of both D1 and D2 skills to succeed. Overall rating: 8 |

Other Versions of Minerva There are countless versions of Minerva floating around out there. This is more a testament to the laziness or inexperience of many level builders than it is a compliment to the level's design. We cannot hope to review every variant of Minerva, so we have chosen the important ones and left it at that. Minerva was the fourth level created by Spaz, who also did the Minerva2 and Minerva v2.1 conversions for D2. All the other variants have been done by others; however, both the LH and NH variants for D1 have Spaz's approval. Whether you like Minerva or not, it will always have a place in Descent history. Minerva could not possibly have stood the test of time without being a level that is fun to play, so we here at the IDL are not offended by its popularity and feel no need to wage an anti-Minerva campaign. The IDL showcases the complete PTMC pilot: the guys who play both D1 and D2, on a variety of levels that demand a variety of skills to play. To us, Minerva is just one out of dozens and dozens of top-quality levels that our members choose to play. And isn't that how it should be? |
