Second Tier
The IDL War Journal recognizes that not all big games fit our criteria for publication. Yet some stories are simply too entertaining or too special to relegate to the dustbins merely because the games were not played in someone's home level. We have set this page aside as a repository for quality stories from Second Tier players that cannot be posted as normal journal entries.

If there is a story you would like to tell that does not meet eligibility requirements for the main Journal pages, yet depicts a game that is memorable to you in some particular fashion, either for extraordinary accomplishments, unforgettable incidents, or personal achievements, or for noteworthy events that may be of interest to others, then your story is welcome and will be published on this page.

For a story to be eligible to be posted here, it must concern an officially recorded IDL match. Players are encouraged to honor their opponents or focus on their own accomplishments. Please limit stories to games that were meaningful to you, and if possible, explain why this particular game or accomplishment or incident stands out in your mind.

To submit a War Story for this page, make sure to include your pilot name, the name of the opponent, and the level that was played, then email your story to the IDL War Journal Webmaster with the words "IDL War Story" as part of the title. Please put "Memorable Match" at the top of the body of the email, to denote that it is intended for this page rather the main Journal pages. Thank you.

vs. kufyit in D1 Manes lvl 1
"This match is memorable for me because it is my last match on my LT profile, and was the match that propelled me into the UT. I was 86-9 at the time for my LT record, and "tubby" had the #1 spot. I didn't think about playing him, because we normally got such horrible connects online that it wasn't worth playing. But about this time, he began to pay for modem direct calls, and he offered to pay for a match against me, with the #1 spot on the line. I can remember ratting like hell on this one with the fusion, getting several kills in a row popping around corners to nail him. I don't remember even touching plasma or quad4 lasers, vulcan and spread were the only other weapons I was using at the time, I hadn't learned the green weapons yet. I don't think he knew the manes 1 very well at all, and I was able to exploit what little I knew about the level to the fullest. I did plenty of stalking him, waiting for him to stop, then POW! Let 'em have it.He was a good sport after losing the spot, and got it back less than 24 hours later, because I was promoted to the First Tier after being nominated the same evening I won this match."

vs. Bruun in Nysa
"It was a rainy day in Seattle (what's new?). I came home from another boring day in a classroom and tossed aside my pitiful homework for a quick game of descent. I booted up my 300a @ 450 (oh baby, hear those fans roar with sheer power). Within 30 seconds I was in win98 and had logged onto the ISP I call home. I hit CTRL-ALT-C for a quick look around IRC and good old #300baud, but nothing was doing. I then did a quick alt-f4 followed by an outstanding CTRL-ALT-K to start Kali up and pounded chat with my famous "IDL Match anyone? MSG Merl now!" macro. Within 7 attempts at finding a match, poor Bruun succumbed to my evil macro! We went to PPG server and decided on d1. He knew I was in the process of switching from keys only to the keys+sw3dpro so he wanted to play my home to get an award as he whooped my butt. Using d1x 1.30 (you the man Sekmu) we started the D1 NYSA game on socket 0. I laid down the first kill with a stream of plasma into Bruun's hull. He countered with some awesome vulcan shots. The game progresses rapidly like this with him firing spread and vulcan, and me using quads, plasma and the occasional fusion. At 3-3 I got fed up with my new stick moving so I set it on my mousepad. To my dismay there laid my phone cord, which became lodged under the stick, causing my pyro-gx to veer towards the reactor. This took me from 98 shield down to 56. I called timeout to move the phone out of the way. Bruun took this time to calibrate, so I did the same. I then remembered that I had wanted to move my left hand keys under to the WASD pad instead of on home, end, del, pgdown. Thanks to R2's tip I was able to switch weapons much easier than before. At 8-7, my lead, the homers were chasing me down no matter what I did to avoid them, so I pleaded with Bruun to play the rest of the match in NYSA-NH. He agreed, but did not have the level, so we went ahead and finished the current level. Thanks to Sekmu, I was able to limit my FPS to 50, which helped immensely. The match went on kill by kill until I was able to set up a little trap in the top room with some mines and carefully placed smarts. Bruun died 2 quick deaths and this gave me a nice 15-12 lead. The next series of deaths occurred down below where all those doors are. Bruun had killed me with 4 homers in a row to bring the score to 15-13. I killed him with a fusion blast, and did not realize he had gotten off a Hail-Mary smart right before he died. The smart exploded right on top of me and I died instantly (that's what happens when you have 2 shield). I then re-appeared in the path of Bruun coming to collect his weapons. Oye! That's gottta hurt. The game picked up pace until it was tied @ 18-18. I had full shield, and I knew he was low. Though I sustained a lot of damage from Bruun's spread, I got a quick kill from a combo of 5 smarts in the upper chamber of NYSA. It was 19-18 and I had 34 shield, he had 100. We got into a dogfight in the big room which lasted for minutes. I ran out of energy and fled to the lower levels to refill. I then came around the back way by the reactor and stocked up on some missiles ;-) With 4 shield left I delivered the final blow care of my friend Mr. Plasma. We shook hands and that was that! I had won my first ever sw3dpro match! The stick just keeps on getting easier to use, and I can't wait till I explode and open a nice can of whoopass sometime around my 300th match. Bruun is a great guy and an awesome opponent, and I love the challenge of defending my home level."
